Do you have a passion for plants and a curiosity for science?
If you could imagine yourself spending a week this summer climbing trees, breeding flowers, snacking on peaches straight from the orchard, or digging into other horticultural activities we invite you to apply to the Horticulture Science Summer Institute (HSSI) at NC State University from July 5-10, 2026! This in person, weeklong, residential pre-college program is for high school youth to explore the wonderful world of horticulture.Spend a week diving into hands-on workshops with experienced professionals and explore everything from breeding better crops, propagating ornamentals, designing landscapes, and the list goes on and on! Field trips to local nurseries, farms, and industry partners will demonstrate the application of horticulture throughout the state and globally. The days will be rounded out with evening entertainment with topics like floral design, botanical illustration, and soap making.
Not only will youth gain insights into horticultural careers, but also meet like-minded peers who enjoy plants, the outdoors, and have a personal or career interest in horticulture. Youth come to HSSI from all across North Carolina, the southeast, and across the country. The program is $675 and applications are now open. Scholarships may be available based on financial need.
