Collapse ▲Growth Regulator
Applications of growth regulator (Apogee/Kudos = prohexadione calcium) can be used to decrease excessive vine growth, improve row visibility, and we have seen yield responses with it in areas with high vine growth. This has generally been with irrigated Virginia type peanuts under soil and growing conditions that produce large canopies, though we have seen some additional encouraging results with certain other varieties we are following up on. Application timing for growth regulator is when 50% of the laterals are touching, with another application generally 2 to 3 weeks later. If the field is at 50% row closure, on the other hand, it is too early to slow down growth.
To help with absorption, growth regulator gets applied with 1 pt/A UAN (OR 1 lb/A spray grade AMS) and 1 qt/A COC. Even so, absorption is slow and takes about 8 hours. This is long enough where it is still good to keep an eye on possible rain. While many products including fungicides can be mixed and applied with growth regulator, moderation with the total number of products in the mix is good given the cost. Ask your agent if reduced rates are for you.
Disease
Following recent rains, leaf spot is beginning to be more visible, mostly in areas that had problems last year or the year before. White mold has similarly been spotted. For both of these, the symptoms we see pop up after the infection has already begun. We’ve heard it before, prevention is our friend in managing diseases.
Coming up on the 60 day fungicide spray, if soil tests show Mn is needed, it can be added in the tank. If uncertain about products mixing and applying well together, a quick jar compatibility test can help put some of those questions to rest.
The chance of more rain in the forecast for next week will help move the crop along as we start moving past pegging and into pod fill. A lot of good peanut potential out there.
